What God Says About Health and Healthy Eating?

Eating Gods Way

There have been so many misconceptions about health and healthy eating throughout my lifetime.  I am sure there are going to be so many more fads out there that are going to claim, “this is the way to health,” “this is the way to losing weight… for good this time,” “take this pill,” “this supplement,” “read this book,” etc.  How do you decipher the good from the bad, the healthy from the unhealthy?

First and foremost, seek the scriptures and see what God says about Health…

1. 1 Corinthians 6:19-29 says, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”  So I ask myself, does what I eating glorify the Lord?  Is this going to help me serve God better?  Will this food make me a healthier servant to do Gods will for my life?

2. Genesis 1:29 says, “And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.”  I ask myself, does this food contain unnatural, chemical, or highly processed ingredients, or is it food our Father has provided for our nourishment?  Does this “diet” exclude any major food group that God has provided for us?

3. Proverbs 25:27 says, “It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory.”  Anything in excess is not good.  We live in a world of excess, where more is better!  The sad truth is the more only leads to more emptiness (or more weight!), when in reality, the void we are trying to fill, is Jesus Christ in our lives.  In times like this, seek the Lord.

4. 1 Corinthians 10:21 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”  Our purpose on earth is to serve him, love him, and glorify him in ALL we do, and yes we all fall short of that daily (thank God for a savior!), but over indulging, not exercising, choosing foods we know are toxic for us, are not going to help us serve God more.  If we can’t be healthy for ourselves and God, how can we love others and do Gods will?

The real truth…

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are free to eat anything we want.  We are not tied to one way of eating.  Our diets will not keep us from heaven, however, if we continue to eat unhealthy foods, we will get there much too soon.  Paul wrote in 1 Cor 6:12, “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful.”  You must choose a way of eating that is good for you!  Processed foods, fast foods, diet foods, foods high in sugar and toxic man-made fats and oils are killing Americans and causing disease.  I know, this is not the life or plan that God has for us.  We all need to seek him first in all things… including our health.

  1. It’s often hard to find the balance between being a religious zealot and being led by the carnal desires, in my journey of healing God has convicted me about my body being His set-apart vessel. I am convicted and am learning everyday but I realise that my ability to heal, be healthy and make healthy options everyday is a consequence of His grace and mercy and not my works. It’s not a decision for one to take likely because it is the road less taken by many until their body leaves them with no choice. I am glad I stumbled across your blog, it’s good to find healthy eating and lifestyle blogs from a Biblical perspective.
